Wer und was ist LEBEN AM LIMIT?

LEBEN AM LIMIT ist ein Foto- und Filmprojekt von drei österreichischen Wildlife- und Naturschutzfotografen, bestehend aus dem Duo Marc Graf und Christine Sonvilla sowie ihrem Kollegen Robert Haasmann.

Im Fokus stehen bei dem Langzeitprojekt all jene Wildtiere und wilden Lebensräume in Mitteleuropa, die in irgendeiner Form „am Limit“ sind. Das Team will mit seiner Arbeit auf diesen Umstand aufmerksam machen, den Wert intakter Natur betonen und Lösungen für ein funktionierendes Miteinander aufzeigen.

In den vergangenen Jahren beschäftigten sich Christine, Marc und Robert vor allem mit der Situation der Europäischen Braunbären in Mitteleuropa. Daraus resultierte u. a. ihr gemeinsames Buch „Unter wilden Bären“. Marc und Christine haben zudem im Frühjahr 2021 ein weiteres Buch, „Das wilde Herz Europas – Die Rückkehr von Luchs, Wolf und Bär“, herausgebracht.

What’s LIVING ON THE EDGE all about and who is involved?

LIVING ON THE EDGE is a photography and film project carried out by three Austrian wildlife and nature conservation photographers, the couple Marc Graf and Christine Sonvilla as well as their colleague Robert Haasmann.

The longterm project has a focus on all wildlife and wild habitats which are struggling for survival in Central Europe or which – in other words – are somehow „living on the edge“. The team wants to highlight these issues, emphasize the importance of intact nature and point out solutions for coexistence.

Over the past years, Christine, Marc and Robert intensively investigated and documented the situation of European brown bears in Central Europe. This resulted, among other things, in the publication of the book „Unter wilden Bären“ (Among wild bears). Additionally, Marc and Christine have published another book on wild habitats and the return of lynx, wolve and bear to Central Europe ("Das wilde Herz Europas") in spring 2021.

Wie arbeitet und kommuniziert LEBEN AM LIMIT?

LEBEN AM LIMIT produziert hochwertiges Bild- und Filmmaterial, darunter hochauflösende Fotofallenbilder von Braunbären und Luchsen, high-end Wildtier-, Unterwasser- und Landschaftsaufnahmen sowie Reportagebilder. Für ihre fundierten Inhalte kooperieren sie mit Wissenschaftlern und kundiger lokaler Bevölkerung wie Jägern, Naturschützern, Schafbauern oder Imkern und ziehen freilich auch Fachliteratur zu Rate.

Fotos, Videoclips, fundierte Informationen sind im Natur- und Artenschutz nur dann etwas wert, wenn sie auch Verbreitung finden! Deshalb verbreitet LEBEN AM LIMIT seine Fotos, Filme und Inhalte über verschiedenste Kanäle, via Webseite/Blog, Social Media, Magazin- und Buchpublikationen, Online Kurzfilme/Interviews, TV Produktionen, Fotoausstellungen und HDAV-Vorträge.

How does LIVING ON THE EDGE work and communicate?

LIVING ON THE EDGE produces high-quality photography and footage, including high-resolution cameratrapping images of brown bears and lynxes, high-end images and footage of diverse wildlife (above and under water), landscape and photojournalistic aspects.  To back their solid contents the team cooperates with scientists and knowledgable locals such as hunters, conservationists, lifestock farmers or bee-keepers and of course they consult specialist literature as well.

Collecting photographs, videos and solid information – even though demanding and work-intensive – is only half the job. In order to show effect, the material needs to be shared with the public! That’s why LIVING ON THE EDGE aims at spreading its photos, videos and information via diverse channels, including website/blog, social media, magazine and book publications, online trailers/interviews, TV productions, photo exhibitions and live talks.

    Our Goals

Was hat LEBEN AM LIMIT bisher erreicht?

LEBEN AM LIMIT und die beteiligten Fotografen haben verschiedene internationale Auszeichnungen erhalten, waren auf zahlreichen internationalen Fotofestivals mit Vorträgen und Fotoausstellungen vertreten und haben ihre Geschichten über Europäische Braunbären in verschiedenen Magazinen publiziert.

  • 2016 wurde das Projekt mit dem Beca MontPhoto WWF Förderpreis ausgezeichnet.
  • Weitere Auszeichnungen folgten, etwa: Nature Images Awards 2016 und 2017 (Marc Graf), Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2018 (Marc Graf) oder Lugano Photo Days 2019 (Christine Sonvilla) , VTNÖ Naturfoto des Jahres 2018 (Robert Haasmann).
  • 16 HDAV-Vorträge wurden bisher präsentiert, darunter beim MontPhoto Naturfotofestival in Lloret de Mar in Spanien 2017, bei den Internationalen Naturfototagen in Fürstenfeldbruck in Deutschland 2018, beim Umweltfotofestival Horizonte Zingst in Deutschland 2019, beim Montier Festival in Frankreich 2019, dem Tollwood Festival in Deutschland 2019 und dem Lowland Festival in Belgien 2019.
  • 7 Fotoausstellungen sowohl indoor als auch outdoor, darunter beim MontPhoto Naturfotofestival in Lloret de Mar in Spanien 2017, bei den Internationalen Naturfototagen in Fürstenfeldbruck in Deutschland 2018, im Bärenwald Arbesbach 2019 oder beim Montier Festival in Frankreich 2019.
  • 11 Magazin- und Buchpublikationen, darunter die Geschichte „Die Rückkehr der Bären“, die 2018 und 2019 in der deutschen, slowenischen und tschechischen Ausgabe des National Geographic Magazins erschien. Im März 2019 kam das Buch „Unter wilden Bären“ heraus.

Achievements of LIVING ON THE EDGE?

LIVING ON THE EDGE and its contributing photographers have received several international awards, the project was presented at a variety of international photography festivals and the stories about European brown bears were published in various magazines.

  • In 2016 the project was awarded with the Beca MontPHoto WWF grant
  • Further awards followed, such as: Nature Images Awards in 2016 and 2017 (Marc Graf), Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2018 (Marc Graf) oder Lugano Photo Days 2019 (Christine Sonvilla), VTNÖ Photo of the Year 2018 (Robert Haasmann).
  • 16 multimedia talks have been presented at different events, such as MontPhots Nature Photography Festival in Lloret de Mar / Spain 2017, Internationale Naturfototage in Fürstenfeldbruck / Germany 2018, Umweltfotofestival Horizonte Zingst in Germany 2019, Montier Festival in France 2019, Tollwood Festival in Germany 2019 or Lowland Festival in Belgium 2019.
  • 7 photo exhibitions, both indoor and outdoor, at events such as MontPhoto Nature Photography Festival in Lloret de Mar / Spain 2017, Internationale Naturfototage in Fürstenfeldbruck / Germany 2018, in Bärenwald Arbesbach 2019 or at Montier Festival in France 2019.
  • 11 magazine and book publications, including the story „Die Rückkehr der Bären“, which was published in 2018 and 2018 in the German, Slovenian and Czech issues of the National Geographic Magazine. The book „Unter wilden Bären“ was released in March 2019.
