Waldwildnis – Der Wert der alten Wälder

Seit 20 Jahren werden die Wälder des Nationalparks Kalkalpen nicht mehr bewirtschaftet. Was das bedeutet? – Pflanzliche und tierische Vielfalt, mehr Totholz und wertvolle alte Wälder, wie etwa die Buchenwälder des Nationalparks – unter denen sich auch richtige Urwälder finden. Und diese sind gerade auf dem besten Weg das erste UNESCO Weltnaturerbe Österreichs zu werden.

Over the past 20 years the forests of Kalkalpen national park haven’t been used economically. What does that mean? – Plant and animal diversity, rising amounts of deadwood and valuable old-growth forests, like the beech forests of the national park – some of which are even primeval forests. Currently the beech forests are well on their way to being listed the first Austrian UNESCO world natural heritage site.
